Y esta, damas y caballeros, a quienes de hecho no estoy
conduciendo, fue su oficina durante todos esos minutos,
la de ese hombre del que nunca escucharon. Ahí están las cuentas
en su buzón, la ceniza en el cenicero, los grises memorandums apilados
contra él, las apretadas filas de los archiveros, el atestado
jurado de su correspondencia sin responder
asintiendo por debajo del pisapapeles con la brisa
de la ventana por la que él salió; y aquí está el auricular
roto que nunca fue reparado y aquí el bloc de notas
con su último garabato, que podría ser su propio tracto digestivo
con úlcera y todo, o quizá el laberinto de flores
por el que deambuló placenteramente hasta que tropezó
de súbito, por fin consciente de todo lo que carecía,
en un pozo debajo de las malvas. Obviamente, la punta
del lápiz se había roto, pero cuando abandonó su cuarto
con el truco de la caída felina o con un simple acto de desaparición,
a todos aquellos que lo conocieron por el desastre en la calle
ese hombre de tímida sonrisa dejó atrás
algo que estaba intacto.

Suddenly finally conscious of all he lacked
On a manhole under the hollyhocks. The pencil
Point had obviously broken, yet, when he left his room
By catdrop sleight-of-foot or simple vanishing act,
To those who knew him for all that mess in the street
This man with the shy smile has left behind
Something that was intact.
