The first page of a manuscript diary of a Tour in Paris and Normandy August 1880 

Monday August 9th 1880

At about three o clock in the afternoon we went with father to Bristol who saw us into the train for Salisbury. Near Westbury we saw the white horse cut in a hill. At Salisbury we had to change stations. At Southampton Mr Colborn & Daymond met us at the station. They had some difficulty in finding the boat as the people seemed never to have heard of Havre till a bright idea struck some one and they called out “Oh you mean Avre Sir”. After Supper at Radleys’ Hotel we went on board where we found everything damp and dirty. We kept the second class cabin by the advice of the Steward who we afterwards had nothing to do with the first. In the cabin four young men had been drinking and smoking but we engaged four berths one of which someone afterwards occupied while we were on deck. So I had to sleep on a sofa only reaching down to my knees. In a short time we saw the lights of Cowes + Portsmouth + Mr C + D talked to the look out in the bows and another sailor who hinted that if he had another sixpence they should have had some grog as they had a new steward who would only sell it for ready money but when it was given to him he disappeared for the rest of the night. A little further out we saw a slight phosphorescence where we stirred up the water. We also saw a great many shooting stars + then turned in. I could not sleep and got up at about four and went on deck I had to go down for my mackintosh where after the fresh air the cabin smelted horrible

Vers trois heures de l'après-midi nous sommes allés avec le père à Bristol qui nous a vus dans le train pour Salisbury. Près de Westbury, nous avons vu le cheval blanc coupé en une colline. À Salisbury, nous avons dû changer de station. A Southampton, M. Colborn et Daymond nous ont rencontrés à la gare. Ils ont eu quelque difficulté à trouver le bateau car les gens semblaient n'avoir jamais entendu parler de #LeHavre...

Aproximadamente a las tres en punto de la tarde fuimos con mi padre a Bristol que nos vio en el tren de Salisbury. Cerca de Westbury vimos el caballo blanco cortado en una colina. En Salisbury tuvimos que cambiar de estación. En Southampton, el Sr. Colborn y Daymond se encontraron con nosotros en la estación. Tuvieron algunas dificultades para encontrar el bote ya que las personas parecían no haber oído hablar nunca de Le Havre hasta que una idea brillante golpeó a alguien y gritaron "Oh, te refieres a Sir Avre". Después de cenar en el Hotel Radleys, subimos a bordo donde encontramos todo húmedo y sucio. Conservamos la cabina de segunda clase siguiendo el consejo del Comisario, que después no tuvimos nada que ver con la primera. En la cabaña cuatro hombres jóvenes habían estado bebiendo y fumando, pero ocupamos cuatro literas, una de las cuales alguien ocupó después mientras estábamos en la cubierta. Así que tuve que dormir en un sofá solo llegando a mis rodillas. En poco tiempo vimos las luces de Cowes + Portsmouth + Mr C + D hablaron con la mirada en la proa y otro marinero que insinuó que si tuviera otros seis peniques deberían haber comido un grog ya que tenían un nuevo mayordomo que lo haría solo lo venden por dinero fácil, pero cuando se lo dieron desapareció por el resto de la noche. Un poco más lejos vimos una ligera fosforescencia en la que agitamos el agua. También vimos una gran cantidad de estrellas fugaces + luego entramos. No pude dormir y me levanté a las cuatro y subí a la cubierta. Tuve que bajar para mi mackintosh,  después del aire fresco, la cabina apestaba horrible.
